THE WORKFLOW
How to repair and optimize a PDF
- Open Repair / optimize PDF and choose the file.
- Select stream recompression and optional linearization according to your needs.
- Run Repair & optimize, compare the file size and inspect the saved document in a PDF reader.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLES
Choose the workflow for your document
Optimize a text-based PDF before rasterizing
Try stream recompression before image-based compression when you need selectable text and page structure. Compare the exported size and verify forms, links and other features you rely on.
Linearize a PDF for web viewing
Enable linearization to reorganize the file for readers that support progressive loading. The benefit also depends on the reader and the server hosting the PDF, so it is not a promise of faster loading in every situation.

What to check in the result
Repair cannot reconstruct page content that is missing from a truncated or severely damaged file. An encrypted input may need its known password removed first. Recompression may produce little reduction or a larger file if the original was already efficient; keep whichever verified copy meets your needs.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions about this PDF task
Can repair recover every corrupted PDF?
No. It can rebuild supported structure but cannot restore bytes or pages that are absent or unreadable.
Is optimization the same as PDF image compression?
No. This workflow uses stream and structure operations. The separate compression modes render pages as images.
What should I do if optimization fails?
Confirm the input opens in a PDF reader and unlock it first if needed. Retain the original and obtain a fresh source when the file is incomplete.
