Make a scanned PDF searchable

A scanned PDF is often a set of page images, so searching or copying its words does not work. OCR recognizes characters from those images and adds a text layer or exports plain text.

Make a scanned PDF searchable

THE WORKFLOW

How to make a scanned PDF searchable

  1. Open OCR searchable PDF and choose a scanned document.
  2. Select the available OCR settings and output type, then run recognition in your browser.
  3. Download the result and search for a phrase you can see on the page. Compare important names and numbers with the original scan.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

Choose the workflow for your document

Make a scanned document searchable

Choose Searchable PDF + text, run recognition and try searching for a phrase from the scan. Searchability comes from a recognized text layer; it does not mean every word was recognized correctly or that the original reading order was preserved.

Extract English or Hindi text from a PDF scan

Select the document language before recognition. The tool also offers Spanish, French, German and Italian. Use Text only for Hindi and review its text export: the current searchable-PDF layer only embeds basic Latin characters, so it does not preserve a complete Hindi search layer.

BEFORE YOU SHARE

What to check in the result

OCR accuracy depends on scan resolution, skew, language, handwriting and contrast. The tool rasterizes pages, so links, forms and accessibility structure may be flattened. For a faint or tilted scan, try Scan cleanup first and then run OCR on the cleaned copy.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about this PDF task

Will OCR read every word correctly?

No. OCR can misread small, blurred, skewed or handwritten text. Always proofread important fields against the source image.

Can I download recognized text without a new PDF?

Yes. Choose Text only in the OCR output controls, then review the exported text for spacing, names and numbers.

How can I improve a skewed or faint scan before OCR?

Try Scan cleanup for deskew and contrast settings, then OCR the cleaned result. Inspect a sample page so cleaning does not erase faint text you need.

Does the searchable PDF support every OCR language?

Recognition offers several languages, but the current invisible PDF text layer filters to basic Latin characters. Choose the text export for Hindi or other characters outside that range and verify the recognized output.
