THE WORKFLOW
How to redact a PDF
- Open Permanent redaction and choose the PDF. Review each page that contains information you need to remove.
- Draw a rectangle over every sensitive area and inspect the preview at a readable zoom. Check repeated headers, footers and copies of the same detail.
- Apply redactions and download a new file. Reopen it and verify both the visible page and any text you can search or copy before sharing.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLES
Choose the workflow for your document
Remove visible details from a shared PDF copy
Review every occurrence of the detail, including repeated headers, images and signatures. Select rectangles on each affected page. A rectangle on one page does not automatically find the same name or number elsewhere in the document.
Check the exported redacted document
Open the downloaded copy, inspect every page and try selecting or searching for the removed text. Review document properties separately. Keep the unredacted source in a private location so it is not accidentally attached instead.
BEFORE YOU SHARE
What to check in the result
The current export rasterizes every output page. Selectable text, links, forms, annotations, layers and accessibility structure are flattened. Redaction does not automatically find repeated details or audit metadata. Keep the source private and inspect the exported copy carefully.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions about this PDF task
Is a black highlight the same as redaction?
No. A visual overlay can leave content recoverable. Use Permanent redaction and verify the saved output rather than relying on a black shape or highlight.
Does redaction also remove PDF metadata?
The redaction selection targets page areas. Do not treat it as a metadata audit. Inspect the saved document and use the metadata tool for common title, author and subject fields.
Will the redacted PDF keep interactive form fields?
The current redaction export rasterizes every output page. Text selection, links, forms, annotations, layers and accessibility structure are flattened, including on pages where no rectangle was drawn.
